No Exit from Gaza: A New War Crime?

(Prefatory Note: this is a modified version of a post published online, July 15, 2014, at the recently established very informative website, Middle East Eye; as the casualty totals continue to mount while the world looks on in stupefied inaction, the attacks go on; at the very least, from a humanitarian perspective,there should be a global outcry demanding that children, mothers, and those sick and disabled be allowed to leave the Gaza Strip until current hostilities end. Yet this is a gap in international humanitarian law, refugee law, and the moral sensibilities of the combatant states.)

 

 

As the hideous Israeli assault on Gaza, named Operation Protective Edge, by the IDF enters its second week, overdue international appeals for a ceasefire fall on deaf ears. The short lived July 15th ceasefire arranged by Sisi’s Egypt had many accompanying signs of bad faith from its inception, including the failure to allow Hamas to participate in the process, insultingly conveying the proposed terms of the ceasefire through public media. The vague terms depicted, alongside the failure to take any account of Hamas’ previously announced conditions, suggest that this initiative was not a serious effort to end the violence, but rather a clever ploy to regain moral credibility for Israel thereby facilitating the continuation and even intensification of its violent military campaign that was never defensive in conception or execution. Rather than being a real effort to end the violence, such a ‘ceasefire’ seems best understood as a sophisticated for form of escalation produced by a descent into the lower depths of Israeli hasbara. Such an Israeli tactic was facilitated by the active complicity of the Egyptian government that shares with Israel an undisguised wish to destroy Hamas. Cairo regards Hamas as an offshoot of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, an organization that has been criminalized and viciously repressed, and has collaborated with Tel Aviv ever since Sisi took over control of the Egyptian government.

 

Throughout Protective Edge Bibi Netanyahu has been telling the world that no outside pressure will alter Israel’s resolve to reach its military and political goals to disable Hamas for the indefinite future. The main official justification for such aggression is to make sure this time that Israelis will never again have to seek shelter from Hamas rockets, an elusive result that Netanyahu acknowledges could require a prolonged military campaign combining ground forces with a continuing air and naval assault. Others claim on Israel’s behalf that this attack on Hamas is a just response to its involvement in the kidnapping incident a month ago in which three Israeli settler teenagers were seized by two Palestinians, and soon afterwards brutally executed. Such a rationale would still be a hyperbolic form of collective punishment directed at the entire civilian population of Gaza, even if there had been a Hamas connection to the earlier crime, an involvement alleged from the very first moment, and yet up to now not substantiated by evidence even in the face of Hamas’ denial of any involvement. The internationally respected human rights and international law specialist resident in Gaza, Raji Sourani, has written that the scale and ferocity of Protective Edge is an application of what he labels the ‘Gaza Doctrine,’ a deliberate reliance on disproportionate force in any encounter in Gaza. The Gaza Doctrine is a renewal of what was originally known as the ‘Dahiya Doctrine’ after the destruction of the Dahiya residential neighborhood in south Beirut, where many of Hezbollah’s faithful were living, during the 2006 Lebanon War. The inability of Hamas to mount any sort of defense for the people of Gaza or even to provide protection via shelters and the like, epitomizes the criminal nature of Protective Edge, and more generally, of totally one-sided warfare.

 

Leaving aside the debate on causes and justifications, the civilian population of Gaza, estimated to be about 1.8 million with women and children comprising 75% of the total, are trapped in an overcrowded war zone with no shelters and no apparent exit from terrifying danger. Even if families are lucky enough to avoid direct physical injury, the experience of screaming jet fighters attacking through the night, targeting, attack, and surveillance drones flying overhead 24 hours a day, sustained naval artillery barrages, not to mention the threats and warnings of an imminent ground invasion combine to create a nonstop horror show. It has been convincingly confirmed by mental health specialists that these realities result in a trauma inducing phenomenon on a massive scale with prospects of lasting and irreversible psychological damage, especially to children.

 

With these elements in mind, the idea of fulfilling the basic objective of international humanitarian law to protect civilians caught in a war zoneis being violated by Israel, although not altogether. Israeli officials claim that leaflets dropped on some intended targets, otherwise forbidden, that give residents a few minutes to vacate their homes before their living space is reduced to rubble, exhibits a humane intent and satisfies the requirements of international humanitarian law. Such a self-sanitizing gesture fails to discharge the obligations of an Occupying Power under international humanitarian law.

 

In a further escalation of the attacks, perhaps the prelude to a ground invasion, residents of northern Gaza are being told to flee the area, and tens of thousands have apparently done so. Hamas apparently urged these same people not to leave their homes dismissing Israeli threats as intimidating propaganda. Cynically interpreted, Hamas appears to be informing Israel that if they go ahead and invade, there will be responsible for causing many Palestinian civilian casualties, and the shock caused by such carnage will help eventually swing the international balance of opinion strongly in their favor.

 

The entrapment of the Gazan population within closed borders is part of a deliberate Israeli pattern of prolonged collective punishment that has for the past several years been imposed on Gaza. This amounts to a grave breach of Article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, and as such qualifies as a potential Crime Against Humanity. The morbid clarity of criminal intent is further disclosed by Israel’s willingness to allow 800 or so Gazans who have dual citizenship and hold a foreign passport to leave Gaza by entering Israel at the Erez Crossing, including 150 with American passports. No other Palestinian residents of Gaza have the option of leaving even if disabled, sick, elderly, or young. The civilian population of Gaza is denied the option of seeking refugee status by fleeing Gaza during this time of intense warfare, and there is no space available within Gaza that might allow Palestinian civilians to become internally displaced until Protective Edge completes its dirty work.

 

In countries such as Iraq and Syria we grieve appropriately for the millions becoming refugees or ‘internally displaced,’ compelled by the dangers of the raging conflict to seek refuge somewhere in the country that is removed from the immediate dangers of inhabiting the war zone. We can sense the extremity of the humanitarian tragedy in Gaza by realizing that these people whose lives are being acutely jeopardized, have no place to hide from the brutalities of war. There is no doubt that the whole of the Gaza Strip is a war zone. Gazans who have endured many mortal threats and a siege since 2007, currently find themselves in situations of extreme hazard, and yet have no possibility of seeking temporary safety as refugees by crossing an international border. The idea of internal refuge is almost inapplicable given the ferocious nature of Protective Edge that has spared not one corner of the tiny and overcrowded Gaza Strip. To be sure, in response to Israeli warnings to abandon their homes tens of thousands of Palestinians are fleeing south from north Gaza. At present writing , an estimated 17 thousand Palestinians have obtained refuge in the 20 UN-run schools situated throughout Gaza. UNRWA is doing its heroic best to handle these desperate people but its buildings have limited space and lack the facilities to handle properly this kind humanitarian emergency–insufficient bathrooms, no beds, and not enough space to meet the demands.

 

This is not the first time that this exit challenge has been posed in Gaza. Back in 2008-09 and 2012, Israeli launched major military operations in Gaza, and the issue of the entrapped civilian population was brought to the attention of the UN and the international community, a challenge met as now with scandalous silence. The encirclement of Gaza by Israeli controlled crossings and fences, even worse than in the past due to an Egyptian political leadership that makes no secret of its hostility to Hamas. The overall humanitarian crisis is catastrophic in the risk it poses to the totally vulnerable Gazan social reality.

 

For some perspective, it is useful to recall that just prior to the Kosovo War in 1999, up to a million Kosovars crossed into Macedonia to escape anticipated NATO air strikes and because of a credible fear of an imminent ethnic cleansing campaign carried out by Serbian forces then controlling the country. As soon as the war was over and Serbia abandoned Kosovo, these refugees returned, having safely navigated the dangers of the war.

 

In Libya, too, the international community meaningfully responded in 2011 to the urgent crisis of an entrapped civilian population. In the Libyan crisis Security Council members talked piously about relying on the emergent norm of international law known as the Responsibility to Protect, or R2P, that validated intruding on Libyan sovereignty by way of a No Fly Zone that was established to protect the civilian population of Benghazi facing the vengeance of Qaddafi’s forces. This 2011 intervention has been much criticized because the humanitarian justification on which authorization for the undertaking was transformed immediately into a controversial regime-changing intervention that raised many objections. What is most relevant here is that the UN and the member governments of the Security Council acknowledged their responsibility to do something to protect a civilian population unable to remove itself from a combat zone. It should not be forgotten in comparing Libya with Gaza that humanitarian appeals seem much more effective when the country in question is perceived to have strategic value, especially large oil deposits.

 

The UN , aside from the admirable field efforts of UNRWA noted above, and the international refusal to adopt measures protective of the people of Gaza is unforgiveable, particularly as Gazans are being subjected to severe forms of violence that are approaching genocidal thresholds. Even so the UN and its leading member governments turn their heads and look away. Some do wors by actually endorsing Israel’s aggression. This pattern of behavior exhibits either a sense of helplessness in the face of Israel’s military juggernaut or even more disturbingly, a silence that can be construed as tacitly blessing this infernal entrapment of innocent and a long victimized people.

 

International law has little to say. International refugee law avoids issues associated with any right to escape from a war zone and does impose a duty on belligerent parties to provide civilians with an exit and/or a temporary place of sanctuary. International humanitarian law offers little more by way of protection to an entrapped people, despite the seeming relevance of the Fourth Geneva Convention devoted to the Protection of Civilians in Time of War. There is accorded to foreign nationals a right of departure with the onset of war, including even repatriation to an enemy country, but no right of nationals to leave their own country if under attack. And the generalized obligation of an Occupying Power to protect the civilian population is legally subordinated to its security needs, including military necessity, and so is generally of little practical use during an ongoing military operation.

 

What is evident in relation to the entrapped civilian population of Gaza is that no legal obligation exists to provide for safe havens either within the country experiencing the warfare or beyond its borders. At minimum, this horrible cauldron of violence and vulnerability reveals serious gaps in international humanitarian law, as well as the absence of self-imposed moral constraints that might limit belligerent violence. Such unattended vulnerability to atrocity urgently calls for a supplemental international agreement, perhaps taking the form of a treaty protocol to the Geneva Convention conferring an unconditional right of exit on civilians entrapped in a war zone. There is also a need to make any denial of the right of exit a species of war crime within the purview of the International Criminal Court. It should also be considered whether there should be conferred a right of internal displacement, imposing an obligation upon the Occupying Power, a territorial government, and insurgent actor to establish and respect enclaves set aside for displaced persons and to allow unimpeded civilian departure from war zones so as to take advantage of internal displacement. There are further complications that need to be addressed including whether the territorial government or Occupying Power can invoke security considerations to deny exit and displacement rights to those it has reason to believe are entitled to respect as civilians.

 

For the present it is enough to observe that the civilian population of Gaza finds itself totally entrapped in a terrifying war zone, and that Israel, the UN, and neighboring governments have refused to accept responsibility to offer some form of humane protection. It is one aspect of the unacceptability of the Israeli military operation from a moral/legal perspective and the related failure of international humanitarian law to lay down suitable rules and procedures that respect the human dignity of civilian innocence so entrapped. Yet, as almost always in such situations, it is the presence or absence of political will on the part of leading geopolitical actors that is the decisive factor in determining whether victimized people will be protected or not.And so it is with Gaza.

    Richard, your description of what is taking place in Gaza at the hands of Israel reminds one of a similar genocide which took place in the Ukraine in the 1930s. Reading Timothy Snyder’s “Bloodlands” over the past days shows the parallels with Stalin’s mass starvation and murder of Ukraine’s population in order to provide grain for export. And I haven’t even got to the part where Hitler enters the scene. One day, Israel will get its comeuppance. We can only hope it doesn’t take as long as it did for Stalin and Hitler. When will we learn our history so we don’t have to repeat the past? Today’s folks seem to be as ignorant and apathetic as those who suffered then. O, Palestine!

    Your first paragraph stopped me cold. Are you not even aware that Hamas is forcing civilians to stay in their houses? Do you not know why?

    I am not going to repeat what I’ve already written about the Hamas attacks. Obviously it made no impression on you and you are intent on criminalizing Israel when it is acting as any other country would act under such circimstance, and with far greater care to avoid civilian casualties.

    Your basic error is to create a false equation where the Israeli government and army are on the one side and the Palestinian people are on the other side. The real equation is between the Israeli government and army on the one side and the Arab governments and armies (including the terrorists) on the other side. The Palestinian people, to use the commonplace phrase, are caught in the middle. They are the victims of war, not of Israel. They are the victims of the wars brought to the Middle East by the Arabs themselves.

    Now there is a new cease fire set to go into effect at 6 a.m local time tomorrow morning, under the same conditions (or “clever ploy”) that Hamas initially rejected. Have they had enough? You had better hope so. I am no longer going to justify Israel’s right to defend itself, since you do not wish to recognize it. I will only state inequivocally that as long as Hamas keeps firing rockets at Israel’s civilian population, Israel will fire back. When the rocket fire stops, Israel will stop. That is the message you should be reinforcing on behalf of the Palestinian people.

    Why are Americans silent when their government is committing genocide in Gaza? Israel is expanding by killing mothers and their children of native people. The Zionists are COLONISTS who were living around black sea adopted Judaism in 8th century. They are from a Turkic tribe (khazari) and have NO relation with the land of Palestine. Palestine is the land of Palestinians and those Hebrews living side by side together for a long time. Ashkenazis are colonists and the process is similar to AmiriKKKan colonists who took over AmericKKKa by committing genocide.

      If you are an Arab, I understand you. If you are not, I don’t. Two hundred dead in a war of this kind, probably half of them Hamas terrorists, is not genocide. The only colonists in the Land of Israel are the Arabs who came out of the desert in the seventh century and conquered it. They also conquered Spain. Does that make the Spanish people colonists? The Khazar fiction was popularized by Arthur Koestler and eagerly picked up by the same kind of people who believe that 4,000 Jews didn’t show up for work at the World Trade Center on the morning of 9/11. But if you’re an Arab I understand you. Many Jews feel about Arabs what most Arabs feel about Jews, but many, many more don’t.

        They should not be confused with Jews and by that disrespect Old Testament and Jewish name.

        People like Ayelet Shaked are false-Jews, and are Synagogue of Satan – they are uncultivated fascist pagans – just as Hitler was uncultivated fascist pagan that applied Christianity to himself – when in fact he was of the devil – a false Christian.

        Arab women are offspring of the ancient prophets, in the Holy Land –for that reason they and their children are targeted by the brood of vipers (that are here in US and also in Israel)!

        Jews should take people like Ayelet Shaked and throw them into the sea – they are so evil for them, in fact, they are treason filled traitors to the Holy Land!

        I just came across this report:

        the wrath is resting with me and I hear harsh curses against wicked in the realm of the Spirit.
        I speak the death to the womb of the woman Jezebel and curse her mind, and cut her off –the womb of Israel state is accused in the name of God of David the King, and we will curse them by the wow of destruction that is in the Church Charismatic Catholic — an irrevocable curse by Gods Spirit — that is exactly what is coming trough my mind right now, and as I am writing this I am praying in the language of God’s Spirit.

        This is just awkward because I supposed to be in perpetual prayer chapel for my spiritual development, and all I can do is curses by Spirit.

        I know that this is harsh on human spirit — but not for the prophetic anointing — to curse them by the wow of destruction, without mercy we give them over to Satan. As long as they kill they will be cursed in the name of God of Israel, the Holy One, Jehovah – Shalom whom they hate by their works in Satan.
        I want my land back.

    Richard, perhaps you know Jeremy Hammond or know of him, but yesterday I read this excerpt from his book, ‘The Rejection of Arab Self-Determination: The Struggle for Palestine and the Roots of the Arab-Israeli Crisis.’

    Now I imagine you read a lot of material, and I’m hesitant to put more on your plate, but I would respect your opinion of this excerpt since you would be able to confirm or question the information.

    If Jeremy is correct, the Palestinians were shafted by the powers who didn’t want to take in the Jewish refugees into their own countries after WWII even before Israel was recreated from the Bible after an absence of 3000 years, and they are still being shafted to this very Day.

      Forgive me for interceding here, and not wishing to preclude an answer from Richard, but I am in contact with Jeremy, and have reviewed the first chapter of his new book. For what it’s worth:

      “Summary review:

      Not long ago I became acquainted with Jeremy R. Hammond, the author of a new book on the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict. I had logged onto his website and read his plug for this book, entitled “Obstacle to Peace: The U.S. Role in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict”. The title intrigued me because I had recently read Rashid Khalidi’s “Brokers of Deceit: How the US has Undermined Peace in the Middle East”. So I wrote to Hammond asking if his book adds anything new to the subject that Khalidi may not have covered. He kindly replied with a rather long essay explaining how his book differs from Khalidi’s, and why what he has to say is important. When I asked if his book was yet available, he told me it was in the process of being edited for publication. Meanwhile, he could send me a PDF of the first chapter if I was interested. I have just finished reading it, consisting of forty pages, including ten of very detailed notes.

      This first chapter tells the story of the rise of Hamas as a major force in Gaza. Hamas was formed as a split-off from the Palestine Liberation Organization, critical of it under the leadership of Yasser Arafat. In this first chapter, Hammond explains this split and describes how Hamas grew as a force; how it won the democratic election for leadership of Palestine in the occupied territories; the conflict with Fatah under the leadership of Mahmoud Abbas.

      We learn the aftermath of the 1967 War, when territories captured and occupied by Israel were supposed to be returned to the subjugation of administration by Jordan and Egypt, but continued to be occupied by Israel forces contrary to many UN resolutions.

      An important part of this chapter, which many followers of this conflict may be unaware is the description of U.N. General Assembly Resolution 181 which developed from Great Britain’s attempt to extract itself from the conflict.

      From there, Hammond goes on to describe how Israel ended up with the majority of the land while being the minority of the population in the mandated area. Though the General Assembly had recommended two states, only Israel succeeded in becoming a state, while Palestine remains an occupied territory.

      There is so much documented detail crammed into the pages of this first chapter, that it would be difficult to review everything without repeating it verbatim. It is an overview of the conflict leading up to the commencement of “Operation Cast Lead”.

      I have read many books about the Israel-Palestinian conflict, but none that supplies so much information so objectively, laying certain blame on all parties, while remaining above monocausal accusations. Hammond’s is a book that, assuming the rest is as informative and well written as this first chapter, will be a must read for those who want to understand the many causes for, and inability to solve this continuing dispute.

      Watch for it!”

        I share Gene’s assessment of Jeremy’s work, and his appreciation of its contribution. I await the published version, as well.
        The only comparable work that narrates the conflict from its roots in the Zionist movement of the late 19th century is Victor
        Kattan’s very good historical presentation.

        To label the conflict as having its roots in the Zionist movement is as dishonest as refusing to condemn Hamas as guilty of war crimes in the present round of fighting, or even the suicide bombings as war crimes, blandly and off-handedly acknowledging their “illegality” and immediately rationalizing them (“Do they have a choice?”). Lauding the work of a Jeremy Hammond, who does not understand a single language relevant to the documentation of the conflict other than English and gets all of his information at second hand, is worse than a bad joke.

    Thank you for your yet another perceptive and poignant assessment of the tragic situation in Gaza. It is heart-breaking to see history repeat itself as Israel’s military unleashes its force against people of Gaza with complete impunity and nominal concern for the safety of innocent people.

      The concern is more than nominal and Israel’s force is being unleashed against a terrorist organization that numbers 40,000 “fighters” and has already fired over 1,000 of its 10,000 rockets at Israel’s civilian population. Unless tou made yourself heard when Israeli women and children were blown to pieces in buses and restaurants and murdered in there homes by Arab terrorists, you are a hypocrite.

        One man’s terrorist is another’s freedom fighter (Ramzy Baroud). As a matter of fact I did make myself heard then, and deplored the Palestinian tactics as counterproductive. But what Israel has done in retaliation to those tactics, which, by the way, have not recurred in years, is even more deplorable.

        If Hamas is prevented from murdering Israelis, it is precisely because of Israel’s security measures. Whether you know it or not, they are always trying.

        I have also characterized the fighting in Gaza. Since you would rather not hear it, I can only repeat myself:

        All damage to life and limb inflicted by Hamas on Israel’s civilian population, from the suicide bombings on down, are intentional. All damage inflicted by Israel on the civilian population of Gaza is unintentional, a direct and tragic result of the actions of Hamas.

        Returning fire emanating from a built-up area is recognized in international law as legal, with the proviso that every effort be made to avoid civilian casualties. This is exactly what Israel is doing by announcing in advance which Hamas installations are going to be attacked and giving civilians time to evacuate the area.

        Rocket attacks intentionally directed against a civilian population such as Hamas is engaged in carrying out is a war crime.

        Using civilians as human shields, by storing and firing rockets in proximity to schools, hospitals, mosques and residential buildings such as Hamas is doing, is a war crime.

        Re your Editorial Board’s “Israel’s War in Gaza” (June 19, 2014), I would like to bring a few errors to your attention.

        I agree about the tragedy of innocent victims being killed, except that I don’t believe there are any innocent victims on the Israeli side. The whole of the Israeli racist population applaud the killings on the Gaza side, even to the point of sitting on hills as spectators screaming “Kill the Arabs”. That hardly makes them innocent. There have been no victims on the Israeli side save the two your editorial mentions. While on the Gaza side there is no place to hide or seek refuge.

        I also agree that PM Netanyahu should not tolerate Hamas bombardments, but there would be no bombardments if Israel hadn’t begun this stupid war in the first place. Hamas is not trying to terrorize the Israelis, it is retaliating against Israel’s asymmetric Nazi-like tactics to ethnically cleanse the Arabs from its illegally occupied territories with the only weapons it has – impotent hand-made rockets.

        Why should Hamas be condemned for storing its weapons in heavily populated areas? There are no areas in Gaza that aren’t heavily populated. There is nothing cynical about Hamas tactics, they are the only ones it has. One could turn Mr. Obama’s statement around; no nation should accept being closeted in a ghetto with no defense against US delivered weaponry bombing them without mercy.

        You are correct to advise that military action is not a long term solution, but since Israel refuses political negotiations, they will continue to punish Palestinians to the end until they are all gone, or all dead.

        Finally, you state that Hamas rejected a cease-fire offer proposed by Egypt (lol). That cease-fire proposal was drawn up by the US and Israel, itself, without consulting Hamas, or even showing it to them. So, it never had a proposal to reject.

        I am afraid this editorial is again just another slanted opinion favoring Israel and condemning the hapless, innocent Palestinians.

Is that what troubles you, not that the suicide bombings are heinous and barbaric acts but that they are counterproductive? And if they were “productive”? Would they be all right then? Normally, I would be saying that you simply don’t understand the implications of what you are saying, but in your case, I’ll take you at your word. I think the loss of Israeli life means nothing to you, and that is where we part company, because the loss of Arab life certainly means something to me, just as it does to the Israeli army and that is why it tries to avoid the loss of life. But someone who doesn’t value life selectively most likely doesn’t value it at all. That is how you are representing yourself. I’ll say it one last time: It is not the Palestinians as victims that concerns the Israel haters but Israel as the culprit.

      Hamas/Palestinians is not smart enough to make a peace with the wicked and move on? They do not mind being sexually immoral with sexually immoral Western and non-Muslim women, right?

        Palestinians were in Holy Land 2000 years before the first Hebrew person arrived there. Palestinian nation is not based on racism like the Jews. Palestinian have Jews, Christians and Muslim among them.

        Christians believe in all the Biblical prophets, while Jewish Talmud curses Lord of Christians, Jesus including his mother Mary.

        Holy Qur’an calls the followers of Moses Law as “People of the Book”. Based on that command Muslims are to respect and honor Torah and all its prophets. It was this Divine Command which guided Muslims to liberate Jews from Christian slavery in Spain (711 CE), Sicily (820 CE), Palestine (1186 CE) and Germany (1938-41).

        Palestinian did approach Israeli occupiers in goodwill – however, Israelis are not occupiers like South African Afrikans. The later never expelled natives to make space for the European Christians. In fact, Afrikans were more pro-Jews than South African Christians and Muslims.

        Talmud Rabbinic is not the part of the Scriptures; it is heretical interpretations of the Scripture. Its origin is believed to be from defiled Jews who have generational practiced things forbidden by the Law — things such as illicit defiling orgies/pagan rituals, as they were abusing Holy Scriptures. As they were behaving — so did they write things down (Talmud Rabbinic), as we understand this.

        Devout and/or righteous Jew do not believe in any of that Talmud Rabbinic intepretation.

        I heard before that people were cursing Jesus and Mary and actually were Christians; it is all unbelievers in Anti-Christ spirit; it is not just defiled Jews, however. Or they are unbaptized/ in invalid Baptism as Jews-Christians or Non-Jewish / Gentile Christians in generational sins and never sanctified/set apart for God by the Baptism in God’s Spirit.

        Christian Scriptures and writings were written down by Church-Charismatic (the first generation of Christians over the period of their life span).

        Talmud Rabbinic is delusional in essence.

        According to the Books of Acts, which was written down by Luke (one of the disciples of Jesus Christ,) we understand the way in which they wrote things down in the Church.

        Luke himself has sat down to document accounts of things that took place. Paul did not always write his letters, but he has a sign them/indicated that they were from him (it is believed that Greek language in which the letters of Paul were received/written were somewhat broken grammatically and/or in meaning of that).

        However, Paul’s letters / writings are authentic interpretation of the Old Testament Law and the Prophets and teaching / intepretation of the Apostolic teachig that was given to Paul. He/Paul Apostle teaches accurately, but he is misunderstood and misinterpreted.

        Heretic Christianity has misapplied writings of Paul to them selfs, first just because they are not Charismatic Church — that what Paul Apostle was. In fact, there is such abuse of Christian Scriptures by heretic Christianity that has caused judgment of God upon them.

        Holy Quran is the part of the Scriptures (a prophetic writing in the Church age that was not written directly by the prophet Muhammad). Meaning, it was not given in the exactly the same order as were other by the prophets during the Time that Old Testament was written down.

        During the Church age, any prophesy has to be discerned by the Church-Charismatic in prophetic anointing (this is the Church Order).

        Further,

        Palestinians are Hebrew and Jewish Diaspora in Holy Land, regardless timeline of their settling, but the nature of Muslim conquests has caused generational problems/sins for Hebrew-Arabs/Jews in Holy Land. There was / is a problem with religious-racism/invalid Faith that is confused in writing / interpretations of the writings with true addressing about problems with corrupt Christianity and Judaism in that point in time.

        Some writings of Holy Quran are not for this point in time, and when applied it equals to heretical interpretations / applications of the Islamic Holy Scriptures.

        A Note:

        In essence, Israelis were not and are not occupiers in Holy Land – British were/are; it is their doing—their mandate, all together. Their works were problem because they impose irrational demands (Scripturally irrational and evil demands in Holy Land and people in the Land–South Africans hate heretical establishment of Israel by God’s Spirit – just because of that).

        British and other nations only caused grave harm for Palestinian and Jews in Holy Land then and now.

      Yes, Stephen Cohen is a longtime friend. We were colleagues for many years as members of the same department

        In my understanding, it equates the wrath visible in the Nations with the wrath of God, (strong vengeful anger or indignation ;retributory punishment for an offense or a crime : divine chastisement)

        In the next chapter of Revelation, 12:12 it says the increase of the wrath is due to the Devil being kicked out of Heaven and the cause of the increased hostility on this earth.

        The question is which wrath is which? the Nation’s anger being a reflection of God’s wrath? or the anger and wrath of the Devil in this world knowing his Time is up?

        Hope this clarifies the matter for you.

        In my view, with the exception of those who have accepted the new deal in Christ, this whole world is still living under the terms and conditions of the Old Testament notwithstanding this is the year 2014 of the Common Era of Christ..

        Dear Ray,

        I understand that Revelation 11 has described things of the Heavens. The prayers of the twenty-four elders appear to be perpetual prayers in essence, and v. 18 is part of that. It is describing in part the Church age, right there.

        During the Church age, the strength of evil is overcome with the strength of the servants the prophets (God’s Spirit). It is definitely that power of God (God’s Spirit) is in parallel sequence against evil as it becomes great as we see and (as you write).

        According to Revelation 12.12, it is describing excitingly exasperate nature of evil that is coming against earth and the sea.

        I am thinking on this: The nations are angry (they are already in spirit of Satan). The God’s Spirit is restraining force against this evil power (spiritual and natural) so that that almost only thing in which destruction for Satan is to be manifested is no longer man-kind but the creation itself? Mnakind is given over to Satan.

        A note: (Look and see what Paul Apostle wrote about humanity that rejected Natural Revelation / see epistle/ letter to Romans. Moreover, just imagine what happens to humanity that rejects Special Revelation—as we see in this point in time?)

        If you note rebuke to the Churches, you will understand that this rebuke is chronological in order. Meaning, the Churches went from losing the first love (way of the Church/the first generation of Christianity) to completely corrupt Church. With that, it may be chronological in essence with part of the Scripture that we find in Revelation 12.12.

        It also appears to me that point in time that Satan is thrown out of heaven is when he bound to that which belongs to him (humanity that is in his spirit) and has almost nothing else to go about and that Church age is almost over; it is at almost at complete.

        Is this an accurate outline for the point in time? I think it is.

        Also about this:

        This is what I understand:

        One can read and accept the Scripture, and be filled by Spirit of God by the Word of God. However, also, one can be filled by Spirit and accept the Word of God. We know that none of the Scripture passes away because the Law cannot pass away because of the Spirit of God’s Truth is not passing away.

        However, the Law of the Spirit that is in the Church accepts no other Law of Faith in the Church itself, except, by the Law of Christ.

        Law of God Spirit that is in Old Testament will point to Jesus Christ in accordance to John 15.

    Richard, excellent peice touching the current yet critical issues that has been hanging on balance. As much as Isael with her allies running a successful diplomatic and media campaign, which not only influencing the policy makers but in fact up to an extent influencing some influential Arab players in terms of lying the blame entirely on Hamas. It’s seems poor Palestinians either aren’t doing enough or don’t have the scope or expertise to run a successful campaign to draw true objective picture. Sadly the outcome would get from bad to worse, hatred, extremism and whatever small remaining goodwill liberal minded Muslim or Arab has towards Jew is gradually fading away and instead making them move towards a hardline position.
    Can only hope the best.

    J. Hammond’s work seem have ignored plenty of information about the intent and purposes of the British during the partition discussions, from after the fall of the Ottoman Empire till 1948. Perhaps some folks would kindly enlighten, for instance, about the writings over here? http://www.eretzyisroel.org/~jkatz/jordan.html It seems the Arabs had transJordan (about 77%), and both Jews and “non-native” Arabs were displaced from there after its formation.

      By 1938, the British, who did not yet see they had arrived at the end of the 247 year British Empire, realized the grave mistake in pushing the Balfour Declaration of 1917.

      WWI was not even over and already the spoils of war were being decided. I suppose that’s because the Rothschild’s financed the British in WWI

      The British White Paper of 1938 effectively abrogated the Balfour Declaration which read as follows:
      Foreign Office
      November 2nd, 1917

      Dear Lord Rothschild,

      I have much pleasure in conveying to you, on behalf of His Majesty’s Government, the following declaration of sympathy with Jewish Zionist aspirations which has been submitted to, and approved by, the Cabinet.

      “His Majesty’s Government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavours to facilitate the achievement of this object, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any other country.”

      I should be grateful if you would bring this declaration to the knowledge of the Zionist Federation.

      From that 1938 White Paper:
      It has been urged that the expression “a national home for the Jewish people” offered a prospect that Palestine might in due course become a Jewish State or Commonwealth. His Majesty’s Government do not wish to contest the view, which was expressed by the Royal Commission, that the Zionist leaders at the time of the issue of the Balfour Declaration recognised that an ultimate Jewish State was not precluded by the terms of the Declaration. But, with the Royal Commission, His Majesty’s Government believe that the framers of the Mandate in which the Balfour Declaration was embodied could not have intended that Palestine should be converted into a Jewish State against the will of the Arab population of the country. That Palestine was not to be converted into a Jewish State might be held to be implied in the passage from the Command Paper of 1922 which reads as follows

      “Unauthorized statements have been made to the effect that the purpose in view is to create a wholly Jewish Palestine. Phrases have been used such as that `Palestine is to become as Jewish as England is English.’ His Majesty’s Government regard any such expectation as impracticable and have no such aim in view. Nor have they at any time contemplated …. the disappearance or the subordination of the Arabic population, language or culture in Palestine. They would draw attention to the fact that the terms of the (Balfour) Declaration referred to do not contemplate that Palestine as a whole should be converted into a Jewish National Home, but that such a Home should be founded IN PALESTINE.”

      But this statement has not removed doubts, and His Majesty’s Government therefore now declare unequivocally that it is not part of their policy that Palestine should become a Jewish State. They would indeed regard it as contrary to their obligations to the Arabs under the Mandate, as well as to the assurances which have been given to the Arab people in the past, that the Arab population of Palestine should be made the subjects of a Jewish State against their will.

      The conclusion was the British was going to impose a One State Solution based on proportional representation with the Arab population being the majority.

      The Imperial Mantle was transferred to the USA before the British could impose their solution in Palestine.

        A note:

        I have looked at these writings over the time, and they were so deluding (from the Biblical perspective). These writings were non-spiritual, and with that without substance—they were religiously ethical/ artfully, and in the conscience; however, are null and void based on the spiritual essence. In essence, all has to be corrected, and again, in line with God’s purpose. It was allowed to be as it was and is now…

        I am telling you this: the entire English ruling line/families are spiritually excommunicated, and all of them need a valid Baptism in God’s Spirit – they are not inheriting anything, but everlasting fire and condemnation, even until this generation.
        They did too many ecclesiastically dangerous things, generational.Their works were in essence as same as a false prophet…those writings are non-Spirit/no Law of God’s Spirit.
